The Yucatan Peninsula, you can keep it.

We left Palenque and made our way through the "Gateway to the Yucatan" and stopped at some more Mayan ruins at Uxmal(Ushmal). We were talking to a guide, Edgar, in Palenque and told him our plans to swing through the Yucatan towards Tulum and he recommended Uxmal. We toured for the afternoon and moved on. My gameplan has been to see Tulum ever since I saw it at the end of a movie while the credits were rolling. I don't even remember the name of the movie but I waited to see where it was filmed, turned out to be Tulum. Anyway, Edgar says to leave there and head south to a place called Punta Allen. A dusty little village at the end of a road with no tourists, sounds like my kind of place. Well we got to Tulum on Friday afternoon and thought we dropped into Disney World. Nothing but tourists, we headed straight for Punta Allen hoping that by Monday the tourists will thin out some. Let me tell you about this gem of a road to Punta Allen. It's about 35 miles of washboard, potholes ruts and dirt, through lush vegetation, coconut palms and Caribbean blue seas and sunny skies. The road runs right along the Caribbean Sea most of the way, and it was magnificent, and no tourists at the other end except for a few fishing lodges. About halfway down we pulled into a hotel to check prices. $80.00/night. Whoa now, this ain't Tulum, Disney World or the US. After some wheelin and dealin we got a room for three nights for $56/night. This place has fifty feet of sand between our room and the water, with only one other room occupied for the weekend. We have been CHEEZIN' for three days of R&R. Tulum on Monday, then one more night in Mexico near Chetumal and into Belize probably Tuesday.
